Excerpt: . notes. 1 Much as has been said respecting the height of the waves of the ocean, when agitated by a gale, I apprehend that for the most part, they have been misrepresented, and Uiat erroneous opinions are formed of them by landsmen. Sailors, in the hearing of the credulous, love to exaggerate their elevation; and the fears also of the timid who have witnessed on passages a considerable swell of the ocean, magnify its billows into mountains. On the other hand, some have greatly underrated iln-ir actual mass. They cite the instance of a house, or other large object on land, which, though but n. little way off, would not be seen by a person standing close to an intervening fence, only six or seven feet high. They therefore allege that the fact of a ship s not being discernible sometimes, during a storm, from the deck of another a few hundred yards distant, is no proof that the waves which intercept the sight, are comparable in height to the object which they hide. This inference is partly correct; and due allowance should be made for the fallacy. But aside from this, it is maintained by them, that there is great ocular deception in the mere appearance of the waves, and they conclude that the seeming elevation is thereby unduly magnified. I do not subscribe to such reasoning. An ocular deception, indeed, there is, but its effect must be rather a diminution than an increase of the apparent mass of a billow. Why is it that falls in rivers always appear less than their true height;--the Mohawk, for instance, which though of seventy feet descent, seems not more than forty? The answer is, ocular deception. Again, some writer, (I believe, in the English Encyclopedia, ) has contended that the ocean is never disturbed by the power of winds, more than. Nº de ref. de la librería AAV9781230352619
