All text in English, translated from the St. Petersburg publication in Russia. Artwork ' Fort on a River ' on front of book jacket and ' American Stagecoach ' on back. With an Introduction by Evgenia Nikolaevna Petrova, an expert in 19th century Russian art, this beautiful volume is a facsimile of the travelling sketchbook of drawings and watercolors made by Pavel Petrovich Svinin during a stay in America in 1811 - 1813, the years he served in the Russian consulate in Philadelphia. In 1817 the Minister of the Imperial Court in Russia requested that the General Staff find prints of various views of North American cities for His Majesty Emperor Alexander I ; at the same time a similar letter was sent to the Russian embassies in England and in America. It seems that the Russian ambassadors were unable to satisfy the Emperor's sudden interest in seeing views of America. Ambassador and artist Pavel Petrovich Svinin, 1788 - 1839 , based in America 1812 - 1813 , said : " I had the chance to spend 2 years in the United States and I gave special attention to the study of this land." The charming landscapes are accompanied by descriptions of the Russian artist's own accounts of the exotic, fairy-tale land he found the early 19th century United States to be. Niagara Falls, George Washington's home Mount Vernon, views of New York, Philadelphia, Washington, and Richmond, Virginia; & many more subjects: Steamboats, Native Indians, seas, Rivers & townscapes; Plantations, mountains, all described with quotes & descriptions from Svinin's own travel books with biographical notes on the historic people mentioned in the text. Includes a small photo facsimile of the title page of the original work, in Russian, which translates to " An Attempt at a Pictorial Account of a Trip Across North America " , as well as a facimile engraving portrait of Svinin himself, done by an unknown artist at the time . An interesting and important record of the very early 19th Century North America from the fresh impressionable eyes of an educated foreign traveller. " Travelling Across North America , 1812 - 1813 - Watercolors by the Russian Diplomat Pavel Svivin " . 78 Watercolors from the Collection of the Russian Museum , St. Petersburg. published by Abrams , New York in conjunction with the Museum at St. Petersburg. 1992 Hard cover book in DJ , in English *** Securely packed for Safe delivery ~ since 1965 *** 7 x 8 x 1-1/4 ".
