Not illustrated. 1887 Excerpt: ...and Employers' Liability Insurance Co., it appears that the following explosions occurred during the When, however, the enormous number of steam boilers at work--generally in the midst of a crowd of workpeople--is taken into consideration, the number of explosions is really a very small percentage of the whole, amounting approximately to about one explosion to every 2,500 boilers at work. Although the number of steam boilers at work must increase annually, the explosions do not increase in the same proportion; in fact, the average for the last 10 years is very much below that of the previous 10 years; therefore, the average percentage of explosions to boilers in work must have been reduced very considerably, last year's returns amounting to about one explosion to every 6,000 boilers at work. This good result is undoubtedly due in a great measure to the work of the different boiler insurance companies, and, latterly, of the Board of Trade also, in collecting and publishing authentic details of the various explosions, and so enabling those interested in the matter to profit by the failures. For the formation of these valuable associations we are indebted, as you know, to the late Sir William Fairbairn. The largest number of explosions appear to occur at ironworks and mines, on account, no doubt, of the very large proportion of the boilers being used there; the list of marine boilers also stands high, and recently the small crane boilers of the vertical type have considerably swelled the list. Our friends, the Americans, who cannot possibly conceive anything on a small scale, are of course great in explosions; and last year in the United States there were no less than 198, resulting in the death of 264 persons, and injury to 388.
