Paris: Chez David, 1758. Squarish octavo, 271 [xiii], bound in period calf with five raised spine bands and all page ends red. First thus edition of this scarce and important work on mechanics by Jean le Rond d'Alembert, first published in 1743. This work was the first to reduce the law of the motion of bodies to a law of equilibrium. d'Alembert's statement that 'the internal forces of inertia must be equal and opposite to the forces that produce the acceleration' is still known as 'd'Alembert's principle'. This is an imperfect copy, with ONLY TWO of the five plates called for, but is otherwise textually complete. Some light wear and rubbing to corners and spine joints, staining to outer margin of several pages, lower font endpaper torn, but clean and bright overall. This copy bears the library bookplate of Prof Flauti (Vincenzo Flauti, 1782-1863), leader of the synthetic school of mathematics at the University of Naples, and author of numerous works including Geometria di Sito sul Piano, e nello Spazio (1815). In all, a pleasing copy of a scarce and important work. Wellcome II, p. 28. N° de ref. del artículo ABE-1681583996993
