Descripción

A lavishly-illustrated tour of Wales from the late-eighteenth century. First edition. Illustrated throughout with twenty-six engraved plates, eleven of which are folding (collated, complete). With additions to the rear. This is the first volume and the second volume together complete, rare seen together. In full period gilt calf extra binding joints weak and some loose, else fine. . Thomas Pennant (14 June OS 1726 to December 1798) was a Welsh naturalist, traveller, writer and antiquarian. He was born and lived his whole life at his family estate, Downing Hall near Whitford, Flintshire in Wales. The first volume of Tour in Wales was published in 1778 but covered a limited area of the country. In an attempt to remedy this, it was followed by a Journey to Snowdon (part one in 1781 and part two in 1783), and these later jointly became the second volume of his Tour. All edges gilt raised bands on spine. Note, a heavy set, requires extra shipping in all cases. This set belonged to the former owner of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, now worth over a billion dollars, Mr. Fred Saigh, who owned the team between 1948 and 1953 August Busch purchased the team in 1954 until it was sold in 1995 to the current owners.
