Sinopsis: Oklahomans have served with distinction in all of the nation's twentieth century wars. The military heritage of the 179th Infantry Regiment and the 45th "Thunderbird" Infantry Division dates back to the years before statehood. Citizen Soldiers, by Kenny Franks, notes that the First Oklahoma Territorial Legislature convened in August, 1890, and one of its first acts established the Oklahoma Territorial Militia. It further authorized the territorial governor to organize such militia companies, battalions, and regiments as he deemed proper. One regiment was organized for service. In March, 1895, the Third Territorial Legislature passed legislation that organized the militia into the Oklahoma National Guard. As a result, the First Oklahoma Infantry Regiment came into being. All earlier militia units were incorporated into the new Guard, including infantry, artillery, and cavalry units. Units could purchase "at their own expense" property in any city or town for the purpose of erecting armories, headquarters and drill halls. When the United States declared war on Spain in April, 1898, the Army needed many volunteers. Two units were recruited from Oklahoma and Indian Territories, Companies L and M, First Regiment of Territorial Volunteers. They became part of Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders. Companies raised for duty with that regiment included ones from Guthrie and Kingfisher. The Rough Riders saw action in Cuba as a part of the Second Cavalry Brigade. Meanwhile, the First Territorial Volunteer Infantry, joined by recruits from Arizona and New Mexico, was in training at Camp Hamilton, Kentucky when the Spanish-American War ended in August. They remained in service for several more months, moved to a camp near Albany, Georgia and were mustered out in February, 1899. Little change in the status of the National Guard occurred until Oklahoma statehood in 1907 when the men from the two territories, Oklahoma and Indian, were formed together into the Oklahoma National Guard. Legislation in May, 1908 created a 945 man regiment, its officers and men required to attend an annual muster of not more than ten days. The National Defense Act of 1916 brought state National Guard units into line with the organization of the regular army. In mid-June, two weeks after this legislation passed, President Woodrow Wilson ordered the entire National Guard of the United States into federal service for duty along the Mexican border. Among the Oklahoma units called were Company A of Clinton, Company K of Enid, and Company M of Oklahoma City. The First Oklahoma Infantry trained at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, then moved by rail to the vicinity of San Benito in South Texas. By January, 1917, the border situation had improved and the regular army could resume the task of patrolling the border. By late February, the National Guardsmen from Oklahoma were back at Fort Sill. They were mustered out in Oklahoma City on 1-2 March. Less than a month later, on 31 March 1917, as war with Germany loomed President Wilson ordered the Oklahoma National Guard back into federal service . Three days later, Wilson asked Congress to declare war against Germany, and the United States entered World War I. The First Oklahoma Infantry Regiment completed its mobilization at Fort Sill on 4 April 1917, Col. Roy V. Hoffman in command, and departed for Camp Bowie, Texas. On 30 August it became a part of the 36th National Guard Division when it was combined with the Seventh Texas Infantry to form the 142nd Infantry Regiment. In mid July, 1918, the 142nd traveled to New York where they boarded two ships and departed for France. They arrived on 30 July. In early October the 142nd Infantry Regiment participated in the Meuse-Argonne Campaign. World War I ended on 11 November 1918, but the 142nd remained in France until 20 May 1919.
