Purple cloth with gilt-stamped cover design. Quarto. 127pp. Illustrated. With additional text by H.H. Turner and Arthur Cochrane. From the library of noted Yale printer, Carl P. Rollins, with his signature at front. A collection of unpublished letters from the great British architect Christopher Wren to the man who hired him to design the great tower leading into the quadrangle courtyard of Christ's Church, Oxford. The book gives an excellent account of Wren's early career as a scientist and his early architectural achievements leading up to the Oxford commission. Wren's letters to the Christ's Church dean are printed in their entirety and the author provides a careful analysis of the letters. There are also chapters on Wren and the Greenwich Observatory; the building contract for the Tower; the builder of the Tower, Christopher Kempster, with notes from his day book and many other topics relating to the project. The excellent illustrations include numerous photographs of the Tower and other buildings by Wren, architectural drawings, facsimiles of the letters, engraved views, portraits of Wren and other figures and much more. The illustrations all have their original tissue guards. This is a very good copy with minor wear to the cloth. The spine has a few bumps and there are several small marks on the covers. The endsheets have some foxing and the text is in very good condition with some light soiling and wear. A nice copy of a very scarce book. N° de ref. de la librería
