Descripción

The defence of the Lybian port of Tobruk was probably the most famous siege of WWII. By-passed, but surrounded on the landward side it held off all German/Italian attempts to capture it for 242 days. During that time it proved a major irritant to Rommel's desert campaign, as he required its port facilities to shorten his over-extended supply lines. It also absorbed large numbers troops from his advances. During the siege, which was lifted in November 1941 when the Axis forces were driven to the west, Tobruk was garrisoned mainly by Australian troops whose tenacious defence won them high praise. A year later another Tobruk garrison surrendered after only 24 hours resistance. So, although devoting the far greater part of his book to the original courageous and determined defence of Tobruk the author also examines the second and far less glorious "defence" of the port. One of the earlier Tobruk books. First published November 1959, this second impression also Noivember 1959. 255 pages including bibliography and index, 15 b/w photos, e/paper maps. Black hard covers with gilt spine titles VG with lightly bumped corners, internally excellent with light foxing to few early/late pages, no inscriptions. VG colour art DJ has thumbnail section missing rear top adjacent spine, tiny segment missing spine base. few minute tears and a few chips. N° de ref. de la librería 003527
