Acerca de

Sinopsis:

This collection combines two of this century's best loved passions - gardening and photography. Over 300 photographs - a mixture of monochrome and colour - have been chosen for their humour, charm, aesthetic, curiosity and historical value. Some are hauntingly beautiful, others remarkably rare. Others still depict not only garden history, but social history in the making - snapshots, for example, of gardens in the Second World War when every spare yard of soil (castle moats, royal parks and polo grounds included) was devoted to vegetable production. Arranged chronologically, the photographs are each accompanied by an explanatory caption. Drawing on the photographic archives of the Royal Horticultural Society, The Times and the Hulton Getty Picture Library, this is the story of gardening's triumph at the century's end as the most popular and multi-faceted pastime of all.

From the Publisher:

This picture-filled volume combines two of the 20th century's true passions: gardening and photography. Over 300 photos, both color and black-and-white, have been chosen for their charm, humor, curiosity, and aesthetic and historical value. Some are hauntingly beautiful, others remarkably rare. There are those that depict not only gardening history, but social history in the making--snapshots, for example, of gardens during the Second World War when every spare inch of soil was devoted to vegetable production. Arranged chronologically, the photos are accompanied by Mark Griffiths' insightful text, deftly placing them in their historical context and highlighting their more unusual features. Drawing on the rich photographic archives of the Royal Horticultural Society, "The Times," and the Hulton Getty Picture Library, this is the story of gardening's triumph, at the century's end, as the most popular pastime of all.

Descripción de la librería

The Chatham Bookseller began in 1968, and, in 1970, opened a store at its present location in Madison, New Jersey. The store contains over 10,000 books and 80 subjects, and favors good used books and good literature over popular books and bestsellers. The store carries hardcover and paperbacks. Our Internet business began in 2001. The approximately 4,000 Internet books and pamphlets are kept on the premises, but cannot be viewed as a whole. However, we can show and sell individual titles upon request. If you can call ahead, it would be appreciated. Unless you have called ahead, we cannot show Internet books on Sundays. We appreciate all of our customers and try to serve them well and fulfill their special needs. The store hours are 9-5:30 Tuesday through Friday except 6:30 on Thursday, 10:00 to 5:00 on Saturday and 12-5 on Sunday. The business is owned and operated by Richard Chalfin and Kathy Rodgers
