London: Chatto & Windus, 1979, UK first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 5 1/4 x 8, VG/VG condition( lightly soiled rear dj cover ), 216 pages. . In his Preface Alan Ayckbourn calls these three plays 'the first of my "winter" plays'. Written in the month of December for January performances in Scarborough, they mark a shift away from his established pattern of writing plays designed primarily for a summer holiday audience. The shift has left him free to explore more serious themes in Just Between Ourselves and Joking Apart, while in Ten Times Table, as he puts it himself, he reverts happily to his childhood as a playwright with what in more innocent days would have been termed a romp. This change of emphasis has furthered Alan Ayckbourn's maturity as a playwright and brought him closer to his 'unattainable goal', `a totally effortless, totally truthful, unforced comedy shaped like a flawless diamond in which one can see a million reflections, both one's own and other people's.'. Charming, naturally successful in everything, Anthea and Richard almost unconsciously but ruthlessly dominate the lives of those with whom they are associated in business or as neighbors. Over twelve years Sven, Richard's partner, is virtually nudged out of the firm Brian tries, ineffectually, through a series of girl friends to replace his love, Anthea Hugh, a local vicar, falls hopelessly for Anthea Hugh's wife is driven to drugs by Anthea and Richard's kindness. The play ends with Anthea's daughter, Debbie, awaiting the guests for her eighteenth birthday party with Brian making one last attempt for an Anthea substitute.
