This is a dramatic and well researched account of the first 1000 aircraft raid mounted by RAF Bomber Command on Germany in WWII -- the target Cologne, May 30/31, 1942. To make the raid possible all available aircraft and crews were mustered, even those from training units. A total of 1046 bombers were launched for the attack, 41 did not return and more than 900 were considered to have raided the target. Casualties on the ground were the heaviest for any RAF raid to that time at 5000, 469 of them fatalities. However, damage to the city and its infrastructure was vast, a new form of total war was introduced. As well as describing prepartations for the raid. and the attack, the author covers well the issues that led to it and assesses the implications it had for the later bomber offensives against Germany. First published by Chatto and Windus 1965, this reprint the following year 260 pages including three appendices, index, 15 b/w photos, five maps/diagrams. Blue hard covers with silver spine titles on black panel VG+, inked gift inscription front pastedown, dealer stamp lower corner FFEP, text block otherwise excellent. Colour pictorial DJ tape repairs to back, chips, short tears and creases but VG. N° de ref. de la librería 002713
