When this edition of "Thoughts on Hunting" was published, probabl;y in the early 1920s, it was almost 150 years since its first printing, which did not name the author. The book was soon the subject of controversey, aroused by a critical review. This attracted so much attention that a second edition soon appeared, naming Peter Beckford as author and giving him the opportunity to answer the reviewer's criticisms in footnotes. According to the introduction to this edition the book "is still generally regarded as the most important work on fox-hunting which has ever been written". Furthermore it had been subject to many reprints since its initial publication in 1781. In his introduction Charles Richardson says "There is hardly a single sentence in the book which is not of as much value at the present day as when it was written." The text takes the form of 24 letters from the author to a friend, in which every aspect of fox-hunting, from the hounds and horses, to the riders, how to best shoe the horses, the habits of the foxes and a plan for the ideal fox-hunting "kennels." There is also a seven page listing of names of hounds --- three columns per page. One of the publisher's "Abbey Classics" series, this edition is undated but a gift inscription is dated October 1923, 242 pages, c1920, "ornamented" by Martin Travers with decorated title page and a few chapter heads/tails. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles and impressed front decoration are VG+ with hint wear front corners, spine extremities, grey tonings to e/papers, neat ink gift inscription FFEP verso, text block otherwise excellent.
