Descripción

A account of the major events and people in Texas history from the days of the Republic to the beginning of the oil boom. Signed by the author on the half title page. An elaborate gift inscription from"Ed" to "Hector", who clearly was involved in Texas politics. A few rub specks on the front cover. Otherwise very nice. N° de ref. de la librería 002222

Acerca de

Sinopsis:

"Texas history buffs will be surprised at the new look put on many familiar parts of the Texas story by the previously unpublished photographs Haley has managed to find. ... He also succeeds admirably in putting his own touch on the story of how Texas came to be." -- Amarillo News-Globe

From Library Journal:

Galveston is not only the name of an island and a city, it is also a state of mind. Cartwright's book is an excellent attempt to capture the elusive mindset of those born on the island (BOI) who made Galveston one of the busiest ports on the Gulf Coast in the early 20th century, an attractive haven for gambling and other vices in the 1920s through the 1950s, and the tourist center that it is becoming today. Cartwright's breezy, informal style has created a very readable history of the island from its first Karankawa inhabitants to the present day. If this adds nothing new historically, who cares? It evokes the spirit of the place and makes one long to return to the island (even if one has not been there). Essential for libraries where there is the slightest interest in Texas/Gulf Coast history. Haley's book is an episodic history of Texas from the Austin colony to the 1900 hurricane that nearly destroyed Galveston. Each chapter is a complete story. These stories are chronologically arranged in order to form a rough history. Much detail is omitted through this arrangement, and for the reader wanting a good, basic history of Texas, this is not it. Texas is, however, an enjoyable book for browsing. Readers can pick and choose among its chapters, reading only what is interesting without losing any sense of the work. It is well illustrated, and the captions are very informative. For comprehensive Texana collections.
