Small 8vo (115 x 65 mm). [1], 171, [25] leaves (but with leaves 65-70 bound between 79 and 80). Mostly printed in black letter. Edited by William West (of the lawyers of the Inner Temple). Modern panelled calf; (margins trimmed close slightly entering text on title verso and on a few index leaves, title soiled, with old inscriptions including signature of Ed:Drewe). Littleton’s famous rights of property treatise, his ‘Tenures,’ the 1588 pocket edition in Anglo-Norman or "law" French with English phrases – A Tudor Bestseller. Thomas Littleton was a late 15th-century judge and common lawyer who wrote in his field on a theoretical level, as he possessed a deep knowledge of English working law. As an advocate of critique and reason, Littleton wrote the Tenures to reflect a balance of the real with the ideal regarding normal jurisprudential concerns in a late medieval society. These ideas largely centered on the rights of property, which in Littleton’s time, were of supreme importance. It was the editor William West of the Inner Temple who, in 1581, furnished an index and divided Littleton’s text, an arrangement preserved beginning with Tottell’s first French edition of that same year. However, West in essence only imposed enumeration on what was already a well-structured series of propositions. His sectioned edition was valued for their succinct assertions, which were posed against a case, hypothetical, or not. The state of the text of Littleton’s Tenures appears to have induced Tottell, the king’s printer, to publish several editions up to the time of West’s editio versionis; these were 1569, 1572, and 1579. The restoration of the additions on Littleton’s work seems to have driven away all printing competition and Tottell appears to be the only publisher of Littleton in French until 1591 - only transferring these rights to another publisher because of his death. This 1588 edition appeared within a public interest in West’s notes; it also exemplifies Tottell’s enterprising touch on the publishing trade in late 16th-century London. The Anglo-Norman French language was the recognized dialect of legal practice well into the mid 17th century and is featured well in this important book for legal education and common law.
