Handsome brick based coloured Pictorial cloth with a large shield in the foreground with Gilt and Black titling and Moorish architecture in the backgound, a 'Saladin-type' head in vignette with a half moon and cross etc, and on the bottom half two bright gilt Crusaders in chain mail with axe and shield. The spine is gilt titled with shields underneath the titling and a full figure effigy beneath that. A most attractive binding which has a little light wear to the extremities and corners, but overall is clean tight and bright. No Date but c. 1890. 308 pp + A publishers 22 page book catalogue at the end. Internally the inner paper hinges are splitting but the main hinges are tight and secure. The former owners' name and location on the patterned ffep. There is a tissue guarded b/w frontispiece and 3 other full page b/w plates, plus b/w head pieces to the chapters. Some 'thumbing' and a few marks internally and on the page fore-edges. From Mrs Alexanders (very non P.C !) Preface - "Those young persons who have read my preceding volumes of Historical Tales, will, I hope, welcome this fresh one, founded on incidents of Eastern history, written for their instruction and amusement. . you will find in the "Tales of the Saracens" several old friends whom you have met with in those fascinating pages, as well as the history of pagan heroes whose false religion and profanation of our Saviour's tomb provoked the great Crusades of the Western world in the days of old." Chapters include :- 'Mohammed, The Warrior Prophet', 'Abu Beker, The first of the Caliphs', 'Omar the Just', 'Othman the third, and Ali the fourth Caliph', 'The House of Ommiades', 'Haroun-al Rashid', and 'The last of the Moslems'.; 50367; 8vo.
