Descripción ReInk Books, 2017. Softcover. Estado de conservación: NEW. Reprinted from edition. NO changes have been made to the original text. This is NOT a retyped or an ocr'd reprint. Illustrations, Index, if any, are included in black and white. Each page is checked manually before printing. As this reprint is from very old book, there could be some missing or flawed pages, but we always try to make the book as complete as possible. Fold-outs, if any, are not part of the book. If the original book was published in multiple volumes then this reprint is of only one volume, not the whole set. This paperback book is SEWN, where the book block is actually sewn (smythe sewn/section sewn) with thread before binding which results in a more durable type of paperback binding. It can also be open wide. The pages will not fall out and will be around for a lot longer than normal paperbacks. This print on demand book is printed on high quality acid-free paper. Descripción . London, Grant and Griffith, 1854, First edition., 1854. 8vo [21.5 x 14 cm]; viii, 464 pp, 8 hand-colored plates, drawn and colored by James Andrews, index. original gilt decorated blue cloth, gilt lettering, all edges gilted, edges rubbed, front blank endpaper removed, very good copy. Freeman 429. British Museum Natural History Catalogue p. 218. Nissen 1161. Besides the attractive colored plates, the text provides a wealth of interesting information on the history and uses of plants, for example "out of 52, 452 tons of hemp which were imported in 1851, 45,000 tons ere from Russia"; "this Churrus has even more extraordinary effects than the Hashish, for although small quantities produce appetite and cheerfulness, the larger does bring on delirium and catalepsy, these effects may explain the wonderful histories we hear and read of among the Fakeers and fanatics of that part of the world"; "poppy-oil is obtained from the seed, is perfectly wholesome, hence it is eaten and is used by artists."
