Attractive folding tinted map "Map of Scotland from original materials obtained by the Parliamentary Commissioners for Highland roads and bridges and exhibiting the intended roads and bridges 1807" In 1802 Thomas Telford was asked by the Lords of the Treasury to conduct a survey into the interior of the Highlands. Telfords report started a system of legislation which opened up the Highlands and improved communications with other parts of the country. This report by the Commissioners for making roads & building bridges contains a magnificent map by Aaron Arrowsmith and reports on a number of road and harbour improvement schemes. Includes reports on Jua, Islay, Mull, Arran. Includes history of boundaries & shires. In the earlier periods of the history of Scotland, its monarchs appear to have had a very slight and doubtful authority over the Northern and Western parts of the realm. . A very clean copy.
