Descripción

12mo in sixes, pp. vii, [i], 82; complete with half title; a good copy rebound in modern boards. First edition of a rare collection by Samuel Roberts (1763-1848), Sheffield industrialist, philanthropist and close friend of the poet James Montgomery, who published this book. The work consists of three poetical tales, supported by prose prefaces and notes, with an additional prose tale at the end. Roberts campaigned for the abolition of climbing-boys, slavery, lotteries and so forth, and became a friend of William Wilberforce. In this collection The Chimney Sweeper's Boy had been first published in 1807 but the other pieces appear to be printed here for the first time. In his preface to Salley Brown, Roberts specifically attacks the practice of sending young children to be bound to cotton spinners: 'It appears to the Author, that even the Slave Trade itself, dreadful and disgraceful as it was in all its circumstances, was not, according to its extent, more cruel, more unjust, or more impolitic than this'. This seems to be the only edition: there was a second volume printed in 1829, but that is a continuation not a new edition. Copac locates copies at the BL, Leeds and London University only.
