1st 1969. Very good condition in a good dustwrapper. The Tailor of Gloucester, as originally written by Beatrix Potter, was three times as long as the small edition published by Frederick Warne and Company which her admirers know so well today, and she was reluctant to have its text cut or altered. However, even in the privately printed edition, which she published herself, she was obliged to sacrifice some eleven hundred words and in the Warne edition that followed, a thousand words were deleted. This is a printed trade edition of the original manuscript and pictures with all the cherished nursery rhymes included and all the whimsical details retained. Produced with the assistance of the Free Library of Philadelphia, owner of the original manuscript and pictures. Cream pictorial boards. Full page colour illustrations. 9.5 x 7.5" Spine and a few cover edges are faded. Wrapper is unevenly browned with damp marks to edges and creasing; some wrinkling and a few chips. [S]. Sinopsis: When the tailor becomes sick and cannot finish the waistcoat for the Mayor, the mice finish it for him.
About the Author: Beatrix Potter is one of the world's best-loved children's authors of all time. From her first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1902) she went on to create a series of stories based around animal characters including Mrs Tiggy-winkle, Mr Jeremy Fisher and Tom Kitten. Her humorous, lively tales and beautiful illustrations have become a natural part of childhood.A source of inspiration was the Lake District where she lived for the last thirty years of her life as a farmer and conservationist.
