Acerca de

Sinopsis:

This book is a generic revision of the entire caligid family, which has not been reviewed and revised since its establishment in 1834 by Burmeister. It includes detailed descriptions of all genera within the family along with a discussion on the taxonomic status of the genera previously belonging to the Euryphoridae and compiles an extensive array of information and literature regarding "sea lice" into one book. The external morphology, functional morphology, life history, and host-parasite relationships of the Caligidae are presented. A key to the genera of the Caligidae is provided. Because this family has become increasingly important due to their deleterious effects on fishes, especially cultured or farmed fishes throughout the world, aquaculturists have become very concerned about these "sea lice."

From the Back Cover:

About this series "Crustaceana Monographs" has been established as a series of books on carcinology in the widest sense to accommodate papers exceeding the page limit of the journal "Crustaceana." Good quality contributions are sought that will preferably fill between 300 and 500 pages, but at least 100 pages and up to 600 pages in print. It is the aim of the Publisher to publish two or three volumes per year. In all its aspects, i.e., format, editorial instructions, etc., this series is indeed intended to represent a series of books truly attached to "Crustaceana International Journal of Crustacean Research." About this volume This is a generic revision of the entire caligid family including detailed descriptions of all genera within the family along with a discussion on the taxonomic status of the Euryphoridae. Based on the type and nontype specimens, a revision of the genera of the Caligidae was conducted. The external morphology, functional morphology, life history, and host-parasite relationships of the Caligidae are presented. A key to the genera of the Caligidae and the Euryphoridae is provided. Detailed redescriptions of 31 species belonging to 24 genera are given including revised diagnoses of all 28 recognized genera. The revision will be extremely useful to copepodologists, carcinologists, parasitologists, and ichthyologists because it compiles an extensive array of information and literature into one book. Because the Caligidae, commonly known as sea lice, have become increasingly important due to their deleterious effects on fishes, especially cultured or farmed fishes throughout the world, aqua culturists have become very concerned about sea lice . This book will be an invaluable resource for all the above mentioned professionals because it will compile a voluminous amount of disparate information into one reference book and allow the non-copepodologist, as well as experts in the field, to easily identify these genera with the use of the taxonomic key. About the authors Mas Dijori studied Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (B.A.) and California State University, Long Beach (M.A.). He was awarded his Ph.D. at the Boston University in 1983. He has published one monographic revision and 31 papers on symbiotic Copepoda, as well as seven papers on other topics. Mas Dijori is currently Division Manager of the Environmental Monitoring Division, Bureau of Sanitation, City of Los Angeles, U.S.A. Ju-shey Ho studied Zoology at the National Taiwan University (B.S.) and Biology at the Boston University (M.S.). He was awarded his Ph.D. in Biology at the Boston University in 1969. From 1970 to 2004 he worked as an assistant, research and full professor respectively at the Boston University where he is currently emeritus professor. Ju-shey Ho published one book and 246 papers on symbiotic Copepoda.
