Quarto. (278 × 238 mm), 4pp. solicitation form for subscriptions for the Livingstone Memorial. A little soiled at the edges and with a small piece missing from the fore-edge, no loss of text. Stanley's printed appeal for contributions for the raising of a permanent monument on the site of the burial of Livingstone's heart. On his death in 1873 the great missionary's heart had been buried by his loyal followers in a tin box beneath a mpundu tree, before they carried his preserved body to the coast for its return to Britain. The site was lost for 24 years before rediscovered by Capt. Poulett Weatherley, soldier, explorer and big game hunter, during his circumnavigation of Lake Bangweulu. In 1899 the RGS sent an expedition out to cut the section from the tree - which was "fast becoming a mere shell" - carved with the details of his death to bring back to London. In the 3pp. text Stanley describes in detail the suggested monument and the cost of erecting it in Africa, and explains the debt Africa owes to Livingstone; "It has been demonstrated beyond a doubt, that the land has a great future before it. the period of experiments and probation has long ago passed, and henceforth there will remain only profit for ourselves and posterity. It was to this end that Livingstone laboured and now that we are reaping the benefits of his long services in Africa, we owe it to that brave heart that the ancient tree which has been warder of its grave for so long, should be replaced by a more durable Monument, before it falls and the place be known no more." The plain stone obelisk surmounted by a cross which was erected in 1902 still stands near the village of Chipundu in Zambia. N° de ref. de la librería 43983
