The author survived WWII service with the Luftwaffe as a highly decorated dive-bombing and ground attack pilot. By the end of 1941 he had already flown more than 500 combat missions and his successes included a Russian battleship he dive-bombed. Virtually all his operations were on the Eastern Front, the majority on the notorious Stuka, in later years the cannon equipped version specialising in ground attack. By the end of hostilities he had reached 2500 combat missions during which he destroyed 500-plus tanks, about 150 artilliary positions and 1000 military vehicles, a destroyer and numerous landing barges could be added to the score. also 11 enemy aircraft shot down. Although losing a leg in a crash late in the war, he soon returned to operations and on the German surrender flew to American occupied territory to avoid becoming a Russian POW. A fascinating account of the German ground attack air war by a pilot who survived a long combat career in a sphere of operations where life expectancy was very short. An early English language publication from the "other side of the hiill.". First published in Dublin by Euphorion in June 1952 with this fourth edition in November 1953, 253 pages illustrated with b/w photo frontis author portrait, six other b/w photos. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG with few light flecks to front board and spine, former owner name/date inscription to half-title, otherwise internally VG+. Colour art DJ is VG, unclipped with tape repair to rear flap fold, upper and lower spine areas, small sections missing at spine extremities, wear to edges and tape repair to front flap fold, some wear at flap folds and hinge ridges, some chipping.
