Quarto. Pp. xii, 62. Plus Author's Note, a tow-sided printed leaf, tipped-in. Frontispiece counted as Plate no. 1. Plus 31 other plates outside the pagination, two of which are fold-outs, the one bound at end incorporates also a line-drawn map. With 7 line-drawn illustrations to the text. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's turquoise full cloth, lettering embossed in gilt on cover and spine, lower corner-tip slightly bumped; old military institutional stamps to first free endpaper, title-page and first text page, some foxing to fore-edge. In a very good condition. Nice, neat copy, very clean and with crisp plates. ~ First edition of this pioneering work on camouflage theory. Several of the plates are printed in full-colour, after original watercolours by Solomon, an early example of the use of colour printing in books in general and in military books in particular. Solomon Joseph Solomon (1860-1927), a painter, member of the Royal Academy. He was a pioneer of camouflage techniques and a strong advocate of camouflage netting. In World War I he was made a temporary Lieutenant-Colonel and a commander of camouflage design team which started the production of camouflage material, following the example of the French: The first "section de camouflage" in military history was established in 1915 by the French, under the command of a painter.
