It is often said an army marches on its stomach, but modern mechanised warfare required much more than food supplies and during WWII the British Army, and other services, relied on supplies of all types from the Royal Army Service Corps (RASC) . This book is a record of the part it played in that conflict, in every theatre of operations where British forces were committed. During the war more than 300,000 officers and men served with the RASC, which expanded quickly and extensively following the opening stages of WWII and ''at its peak was feeding eight million soldiers, sailors, airmen and civilians throughout the world." While the supply services were mainly based around motor vehicles other modes of transport were adopted, inclucing the aerial dropping of supplies, camels and donkeys in the Desert and Italy, with the service operating own "fleets" in the Mediterranean and the Far East as well as in British home waters. The RASC assembled and repaired vehicles, operated ambulances, delivered ammunition and fuel close to the front line, and to it when required, recovered damaged tanks and participated in amphibious operations, such as D-Day. Each and every facet of RASC operations is covered in this massive history, recording the enormous tasks it undertook behind the lines in Britain and right up to the combat zones. A scarce book. First edition of 1955 published by G Bell and Sons for the The Institution of the RASC, 720 pages including Roll of Honour listing the names of about 10,000 officers and men lost by the RASC on active service, general index and index of names. There is a list of honours and awards made to RASC members at the front of the book. Dark blue hard covers with bright gilt RASC crest to front cover, gilt titles to spine strip, unobtrusive spill marks/spots at lower front edge, otherwise VG+, text block is excellent, light brown shadow to rear FEP, no inscriptions. IIlustrated throughout, with four full-page coloured paintings depicting various RASC activities, approx 80 b/w photos, 19 maps (several double page) with map front end-papers. Colour art DJ is VG with several tape repaired tears, three small sections missing top front edge (the largest 2cm deep by 4cm) at the spine top, one piece missing lower front edge plus few small tears/chips. This heavy book weighs 1.5kgs unpacked and would require additional postage for international delivery. Size: 25cm By 17.5cm By 6cm. N° de ref. de la librería 005123
