Condition: Both volumes: Moderate rubbing to cloth along edges of spine and boards. No splitting to gutters at endpapers. Light to moderate foxing to plates. Volume One: A couple of 1/8" chips to cloth at tips of corners of boards. Half-title page and preceding blank leaf unopened along top edge. Moderate creasing and a few small stains to folding frontispiece. A couple of 2 1/2" tears with adhesive tape repairs on verso along one fold of folding frontispiece. A 1/2" and a 1/4" tear to blank fore margin of frontispiece. A few spots of foxing to folding map. Short tear in blank margin of folding map with repair on verso. Volume Two: Slight (<1/8") fraying to cloth at tips of corners of boards. Owner's signature ("John Morrison") in ink on title page and in upper margin of first text leaf. Overall a fairly nice set of the two volumes.; This is the reissue edition (Bagnall 5338), published in the same year as the first edition. In this issue the erratum note is not present on page ix, and the error in the text on page 48 line 19 ('cent' instead of 'thousand') has been corrected. Vol. I: [2], ix, [1], 331 pages + folding frontis + 6 plates + folding map + 32 pages advertisements. . Folding map has a 2" tear and a 1" tear. Vol. II: [2], vii, [1], 368 pages + frontis + 9 plates (2 folding). Blind-stamped green cloth boards. Dark green endpapers. "Two chapters on geography and climate precede the main text equally divided between the Maoris, their customs and history and European discovery and occupation. [.] He gives, repeatedly, cogent and piquant summaries of aspects of New Zealand life and events such as pakeha Maoris, the pettiness of provincial government, the New Zealand Company's brazen impositions which would repay a reading by even modern historians." - Bagnal 5537.; 8vo.
