Descripción Craig Printing Company Ltd, Invercargill, NZ, 2003. Reprint ed.. Hardback small quarto, very good plus condition, pictorial cover, full-page black & white photos, maps, minimal edgewear jacket. 216 pp. The author has put together a great collection of over 200 old photos and sketches that illustrate graphically the early history of remote Stewart Island, New Zealand (now mostly a national park). The maps and sketches are by the early surveyors, explorers and sealers. The photos are of the early settlements, sheep stations and sawmills. There are unpublished photos of the tin mining settlement at Port Pegasus, the only one in New Zealand. There is a complete set of photos of the early island ferries and of the Norwegian whalers who were based on the island. He has added his firsthand descriptions to the text.
