Descripción

"The genesis for this history came in the spring of 1994 at a luncheon meeting with Dr. Mark Jerstad, president of the Good Sameritan Society, and Dr. Elliot Thoreson, a member of the Society's Board of Directors. Doctor Jerstad asked if I would be willing to prepare a history of the Good Samaritan Society for the occasion of its seventy-fifth anniversary in 1997. The account which follows indicates my response. The real beginning of this story, of course, was with a young Lutheran pastor who volunteered to serve 'wherever no one else wants to go.' After 14 years of serving parishes in North Dakota, reverend August Hoefger, Sr., was led by faith to found the Good Samaritan Society. What followed involves two stories. The two stories-that of two families, the Hoegers and the Jerstads, and that of the Good Samaritan Society-are woven in this book, as in reality, into a single narrative from in September 1922 to the present. The telling of this story has required the tools of both history and biography; the effort toilluminate the qualities of Dad Hoeger, his sons, Augie and John, and his grandson, Mark Jerstad, has demanded occasional departureas from chronology. Yet the spine of this work is narrative. There is a quality to the history of the Good Samaritan Society which can be conveyed only through narrative-the commitment of its leaders and employees to Christ-centered, quality care for the handicapped, disadvantaged young people, and foremost, the elderly. Guided by this conviction and bolstered by their unwavering faith in God and his son, Jesus Christ, the Society's leaders and their fellow workers moved together, sometimes through painful adversities, toward undreamed-of-achievements. Seventy-five years after its humble beginning in the rural community of Arthur, North Dakota, the Good Samaritan Society has become the largest, non-profit, long-term care corporation in the United States. Throughout this time of achievement, innovation, and growth, the Society's foremost concern has always been its commitment to its Christian mission." This book has 326 pages and is illustrated. Overall, this is a FINE copy with FINE dust jacket of this VERY SCARCE title. N° de ref. de la librería 062455
