Descripción

Fine first printing in fine dustwrapper. The book is unmarked, square and tight. Minute, almost imperceptible flecking to the lower edge of the text block. The dustwrapper is complete but with dust accumulation to lower edges of both flaps. I have not attempted to clean this. An unread copy. Signed by the author to the title page, without further inscription. As an enthusiastic collector myself, I make every effort to provide a high level of service. Enquiries welcomed. Acerca de

Sinopsis:

A fighter pilot, high above the English Channel in 1941, watches the sun rise; he descends 10,000 feet and then, to his amazement, finds the sun beginning to rise again. With this haunting image Julian Barnes' novel begins. It charts the life of Jean Serjeant, from her beginnings as a naive, carefree country girl before the war through to her wry and trenchant old age in the year 2020. We follow her bruising experience in marriage, her questioning of male truths, her adventures in motherhood and in China; we learn the questions she asks of life and the often unsatisfactory answers it provides.

From the Back Cover:

Jean Serjeant, the heroine of Julian Barnes's wonderfully provocative novel, seems ordinary, but has an extraordinary disdain for wisdom. And as Barnes--author of The Porcupine and Talking It Over--follows her from her childhood in the 1920s to her flight into the sun in the year 2021, he confronts readers with the fruits of her relentless curiosity: pilgrimages to China and the Grand Canyon; a catalog of 1940s sexual euphemisms; and a glimpse of technology in the twenty-first century (when The Absolute Truth can be universally accessed).
