Dmitri Kessel (1902-1995) was a photojournalist and staff photographer for Life magazine known for his courageous coverage of war on the front line, including reports on the liberation of Europe during WWII. From the mid-1950s he photographed Europe's religious architecture, including St Mark's, in Venice, and the opulent monuments of the Vatican. Henri Maurice Peyre (1901¿1988) was a French-born American linguist, literary scholar and Sterling Professor of French Emeritus at Yale University. He wrote the commentary about the church site, history and society of the period each were constructed. Very large book (13.25"x11.75"x2.25"), very heavy (8.5 lbs.) book, 265 heavy weight pages, tipped-in color photograph illustrations throughout, Structural data on 14 specific churches and cathedrals featured, as well as time-line and list of 103 illustrations (9 photos cover more than one page). Modern churches in Istanbul, Ravenna, Venice, Vezelay, Autun, Verona, Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe, Bourges, Ulm, Wells, Rome, Zweifalten, Plateau d'Assy and Coventry. Hardcover has black cloth boards with gold lettering on front and spine in a tattered DJ. Jacket has been a victim of coffee spill, is tattered with chunks missing so supported with tape to conserve fragments. Coffee stains on bottom page-edge without affecting interior.
