Título: The Speech of Rufus King, Esq. in the Senate...
Editorial: Thomas Davison, London
Año de publicación: 1819
Edición: 1st Edition
Small 4to. Wrappers. 24pp. Very good. Minor edgewear and slight soiling to outer wrappers only. First British edition of the influential New York senator's 1818 speech recommending a tightening of U.S. maritime shipping regulations regarding Great Britain -- prefaced, of course, by a British introduction explaining how King's measures "will extensively injure the revenue, trade, and navigation of this country" and that Brits should "receive the proposals of the United States with distrust." This copy bears the scarce ownership signature at the top of the front wrapper of ROBERT G. HARPER (1765-1825), the noted politician who served as major general in the War of 1812, U.S. representative and senator and original member of the American Colonization Society; the famed statement "Millions for defense, but not a cent for tribute" was a toast made by Harper in 1798 after the XYZ Affair. An interesting association copy of this scarce pamphlet. SABIN 37834. N° de ref. de la librería 18139
