Descripción

8vo (160 x 97mm). 280pp. Later three-quarter calf over marbled boards, spine lettered and stamped in gilt; (occasional spots; slight edgewear). One of eight annual novels in the series Journal von neuen deutschen Original-Romanen (Journal of New German Original Novels). Sophie Brentano was the eldest daughter of the wealthy Frankfurt / Lombard merchant and Privy Councilor Peter Anton Brentano and his second wife Maxine La Roche. Sophie, a German writer, was known for her nature and landscape poems, which were also often set to music. As a full-time writer, she explored ways in which to empower women. In addition, Sophie made contributions to almanacs, and translated texts into English, and translated Spanish and Italian texts into German (as in this copy for the journal) which was a translation of ìInstructive Tales and Love Stories from Donna Maria de Zayas y Sotomayor.î Dona Maria de Zayas y Sotomayor can well be classed with those who first braved public opinion to assert and maintain, by force of argument, that women have certain rights and that, as human beings, they are not inferior to men. This work must have resonated with Sophie as it is said that her unavoidable marriage to Clemens Brentano (due to pregnancy) in 1803 consisted of a partnership in which she tirelessly worked for her independence and freedom. One friend wrote of Sophie, that living with Clemens consisted of heaven and hell, but hell was predominant. Sophie Brentano died in 1806 at the age of 36 while in childbirth. She was an extraordinarily important woman writer in the Germany at the turn of the 19th century who promoted new textual communities and cultural thought, especially for women.
