Anchor Line (illustrator). 1st Edition. a good to very good copy in the original gilt blue cloth pictorial period binding. professionally rebacked neatly, else very good. Full title is the Souvenir of the Anchor Line Agents. An Excursion on the Steamer California August 1872. : D. Appleton & Company, New York, 1872. A history of steam navigation, issued by Anchor Line to celebrate the 1872 launch of their new steamer, California. Includes sections on the first ocean-steamer and Atlantic steam navigation, a condensed history of locomotion, electric telegraphy, the Anchor Line flag, the City of Glasgow and dimensions of the Anchor Line Atlantic fleet. Illustrated with line cuts and one tipped fold-out map of established Anchor Line routes. Text block clean, there is a Fold-out map tri folded in center with color , steel engravings of steamships are sharp and fine. a fine breaker or just a spine repair. corners dog earred a tad. Original red gilt cloth, lacking spine, else fair to good, textblock is very good with its decorative stamping on front board, blind stamping on rear board. Footnote: the California was sold for scrap in 1904; her namesake met a tragic end - torpedoed and sunk in 1917. during the supposed Great War World War I. Size: Folio.
