Jack O'Neill, prospected for gold, or worked in the gold fields of New Guinea, from 1931 to 1937, at a time when the only way to reach most of the isolated sites was by aircraft, or by weeks of treking through jungle and over steep ranges, inhabited by primative and often fierce natives. The men like him were tough, hardy, adventurous and resilient and the author has recorded his experiences in sharp detail through diaries he kept. The development of the gold fields was innovative, with equipment being flown to sites in one of the first air-lifts. This part of the story is fascinating, as are the prospecting expeditions which faced many challenges and dangers, not least from tribesmen with little or no previous contact with Europeans. O'Neill was also a keen observer of the ecology of the NG landscape. His manuscript was edited for publication by James Sinclair, who has written of his own experiences in New Guine in several books. 199 pages including pidgin glossary, mining terms and definitions, index, 14 b/w photographs, maps. Green hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, ditto text block, no inscriptions. Pictorial DJ VG+. N° de ref. de la librería 002837
