Descripción

The Song of Hiawatha by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, one of The Riverside Literature Series of books, was published by Houghton, Mifflin and Company/The Riverside Press, Cambridge in 1898. This 114-year-old, ex-school book offering(but barely marked as such) measures 4 1/2" X 7", and runs to 193 pages. It is in G+ condition, exhibiting some modest yellowing of endpapers front and back as well as text's pages, and a somewhat persistent scattering of check marks, bracketing, and brief, marginal notes, ALL IN LIGHT PENCIL, and all pretty well erased/eliminated by yours truly. The only evidence of its being a school district copy are two 2 11/16" X 1 1/8" "Property of." stampings, in light gray, near the tops of the front paste down page and the Contents page. From said front paste down page, "The Riverside Literature Series. [contain] masterpieces from the writings of the greatest authors of America and Europe.with Introductions, Portraits, Biographical Sketches, and Notes.Adapted for use in all grades in Primary, Grammar, and High Schools." A complete listing(at that time, anyway) of all 125 titles in the Series is presented, beginning on the front loose end page and continuing and concluding on the back loose end and paste down pages. Also included are a Contents Page, List of Illustrations(a total of 8 original black and white, full page Drawings by the now beloved American painter of Western scenes, Frederic Remington), 5 pages, in rear of volume, of black and white sketches of Indian wearing apparel and utensils, and, finally, a "Pronouncing Vocabulary", from "Adjidaumo" to "Yenadizze", to assist readers as they work their way through this epic narrative poem(originally published, FYI, in November, 1855) by one of America's most revered wordsmiths. NOTE: There is, interestingly, at the very end of the list of vocabulary words/terms, a note to the publishers from the poet's daughter, Alice M. Longfellow, informing same of exactly how her father pronounced the name "Hiawatha", and that she would very much appreciate their making the public aware of just how to properly say our intrepid hero's name! Thank you very much!!. N° de ref. de la librería 005544
