Last printed page covers English coins and measurements. Yellow edges (toned). Yellow endpapers. 21 x 28 mm. Original maroon leather, with gilt titles to the front . This famous publishing firm was started in 1832 in Glasgow, Scotland and went into miniature books from 1876 until 1913, when it permanently closed down. Although thousands of these dictionaries were issued, according to Bondy, they are now becoming quite scarce and are much rarer than the Smallest English Dictionary in the World. Bondy, 107. With the original engraved metal case and accompanying magnifying glass. Please note that due to wear, the case does fail to close securely, particularly with the magnifier inside.David Bryce and Son was a Scottish publishing house known for being one of the most prolific and successful makers of miniature books in the world. They employed a photo-mechanical process to reduce text to incredibly small sizes, allowing for the creation of miniature versions of works such as the Bible, the Quran and this English dictionary. With a portrait frontispiece of Samuel Johnson. In the publisher's red morocco. With the original engraved metal case and accompanying magnifying glass. Case does fail to close properly, particularly with magnifying glass inside. Externally, very smart, with minor fading to the gilt text to the spine. Metal case shows rubbing, less so to the magnifier. Internally, firmly bound.
