Broadside, oblong small folio, etched illustration, some light usage and small stain in top margin, minor repair, printed one side as issued A Satire on the rising tension between England and Spain after the cutting off of Captain Jenkins ear. In 1731 when the Glasgow Brig "Rebecca" captained by Jenkins was on a homeward voyage from Jamaica it was intercepted off Cuba by a Spanish Customs ship and in the ensuing visit the Spaniards cut off Jenkins' ear and told him "to carry it to King George". The ensuing tension between English Smugglers and Spanish Officials in the Caribbean climaxed in March 1738 when King George II ordered that any ship that had suffered via the Spanish could apply for papers to act as Privateers against the Spanish. The whole incident eventually ended in full scale war between England and France in 1739 known as the "War of Jenkins Ear" The illustration shows an English ship being fired on by a Spanish, whilst in the foreground you have English Merchants being forced to pull the plough under the direction of the Spanish and at the side a Spaniard is cutting off Jenkins' ear.
