Considered the first American career diplomat, this consular official held positions in the United Kingdom and Portugal; in 1948-49 his diary was published as "The Journal of Benjamin Moran, 1857-65," and chronicles the English reaction to the American Civil War. Bold "Ever truly yours / Benj'n. Moran / Chas. L. Wilson, Esqr." on a 4½" X 1" slip clipped from a letter, n.p., n.y. Near fine. Lightly age toned.
