The noted English Army officer and aristocrat was noted as a civil administrator; as head of the British delegation to the Paris Exhibition in 1900, it was he responsible for commissioning Edwin Lutyens to build the British Pavilion; his sister was Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932), the famed landscape gardener, painter and promoter of the Arts and Crafts movement.
