Descripción:

The third of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt's five children had a checkered career in the U.S. Army Air Force, with most of his later claims of adventures and war wounds proven false; after his father's death he drifted from wife to wife and from career to career (radio station owner, rancher, businessman, politician), also producing (perhaps ghost-written) several questioned books about his parents. Bold and attractive "For Arnold F. Gates / with best wishes for one with / so much persistency" and signature on a 6" X 3½" heavy stock correspondence bearing an imprinted "Hyde Park, N.Y." Fine. Undated but certainly pre-World War Two. Accompanied by a superb glossy 9½" X 7 3/4" black and white news agency photograph, a shipboard scene showing Elliott saluting Winston Churchill with his father at his side. Original mimeographed paper label neatly affixed to verso, dated 15 August 1941, describes this scene: "Photo shows, President Roosevelt arriving aboard the H.M.S. Prince of Wales, for conference with Prime Minister Churchill. On President's left, saluting, is Capt. Elliott Roosevelt, Behind the President, is Ensign Franklin Roosevelt Jr." FDR famously detached his two sons from their duties so they could attend this Atlantic Charter summit. Descripción This he-man American actor played professional basketball (Boston Celtics) and baseball (Brooklyn Dodgers, Chicago Cubs) before Hollywood called; though he appeared in "Pat and Mike" in 1952 with Tracy and Hepburn, "Old Yeller" in 1957 and a handful of films, it's primarily for television's "The Rifleman" (1958-63) that he's remembered. Bold "Best Wishes to / Donald Burnell, / Chuck / Connors" in blue ballpoint on an oddly-trimmed, roughly rectangular slip, 3¼" X 2½", n.p., n.y. [ca. 1960]. Good plus. Small tape stain at upper left and lower right, touching upon several letters. Accompanied by a superb 8" X 10" glossy photograph, a still from the 1969 made-for-television film "The Profane Comedy" showing an angry Connors holding a crumpled piece of paper. Despite odd shape and small stains, a nice vintage example -- an interesting pair. Nº de ref. de la librería 36542

Valoración

Descripción American huge-grinned comedian and actor often remembered for his hilarious portrayal of millionaire Osgood Fielding III in "Some Like It Hot" (1959). Huge and bold "All good wishes to my friend / Donald Burnell / Joe E. Brown / 6/22/60" in blue ballpoint on an irregular-trimmed, roughly-triangular 5¼" (width at top) X 4" (height) slip bearing "JOE E. BROWN" printed in green at the top -- presumably trimmed from a sheet of his letterhead. Very good. Other than odd shape, quite handsome. Accompanied by a superb, vintage sepia-tone heavy stock 5" X 7" matte-finish photograph bearing a preprinted signature and inscription at the bottom -- a head-and-shoulders portrait of a smiling young Brown as he appeared in the 1930s, the kind of image sent out by the studios in bulk at the time in response to fan mail. A charming pair. Nº de ref. de la librería 22859
