ESTC and many of the COPAC entries ascribe it's authorship to the fashionable London physician, Sir John Elliot (1736-86). His DNB entry, however, states that this doctor did not publish anything and that the actual author is John Elliot MD (1747-87) who carried out important work on sensory physiology including the observation of light and colours. Monk died in Newgate, awaiting trial for assault after discharging a pistol in the presence of his beloved and her companion. A list of his publications, ascribed to Sir John Elliot appears in the Royal College of Physicians Munk's Roll, Lives of the Fellows. This is a reprint of the 1827 edition by another publisher, which doesn't appear in COPAC and was owned by a Leicester chemist.
