While the Hindennburg, the last and most notable of the great airships, dominates this story the author follows the history of the development of this form of aviation. His account covers airships part in WWI, their use for exploration, particularly in Polar regions, and the series of disasters that befell the giants that promised so much for aerial transport. Among those that met a tragic end were the US airship Shenandoah , Britain's R 101, the Italia and the German giant Hindenburg, whose flaming and sensational loss at the Lakehurts base in New Jersey, in 1937, spelled the end of the airship for commercial aviation. Toland has gathered here a comprehensive account to the rise and demise of the airship. 260 pages including index, 26 b/w photos. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles VG, spine lightly sunned, two dark splotches lower front, internally excellent, no inscriptions, trace foxing vertical page edges as closed.
