Acerca de

Sinopsis:

This non-fiction book chronicles the history of kidnapping of men to serve as sailors in San Francisco from 1849-1910. The criminal activity, the economic underpinnings for shanghaiing and the political system which protected the practice for over 60 years are explored. Shanghaied in San Francisco documents one of San Francisco's wildest periods with footnotes and 79 photographs and line-drawings. Bibliography, glossary, index.

From the Author:

The inspiration for Shanghaied in San Francisco came while doing volunteer work in late 1995 at the San Francisco Maritime Museum indexing old oral history transcripts. Among these stories, a half-dozen first hand accounts of men who had actually been shanghaied leapt out at me. When I stumbled across three photographs of men who had shanghaied sailors in 19th century San Francisco, I knew the story of shanghaiing had to be told.
