In English with some Hebrew. Contains the Errata leaf. [16] 131 [1]; [8][18] 551 pages. 150 x 105 x 45 mm. Last two blank leaves at the end of book have very old notes in Latin in a very neat hand. Original front blank is detached and has an early owner?s name, "H. Cantrell M.A. Coll: Eman: Canteb:" and some penciled notes. Contemporary leather binding with repaired spine and new end papers. The boards have the blind stamped initials I.W., of an early, possibly the first, owner. The first part is a grammar of Hebrew, the second part contains a Hebrew English dictionary. Bound rather tightly. Orme, in Bibliotheca Biblica (1824) remarks that he "seems to have been a very zealous rabbinical scholar"; the first edition of this work was published in 1653 with the title A Gate or Door to the Holy Tongue. He believed firmly that Hebrew could be learnt as easily as any foreign language, and, interestingly, that girls and ladies would have no problem with "this kinde of learning; of which I had often before in my own thoughts perswaded my self, in consideration of that readinesse of wit, and quicknesse of understanding and apprehension, so naturall to them." William Robertson (flourished 1650-80) was a Scottish Hebraist. He was educated at Edinburgh University, taught Hebrew in London from 1653-1680, then in 1680 was appointed lecturer in Hebrew at Cambridge University. A graduate of Edinburgh, he is identified by Edgar Cardew Marchant in the Dictionary of National Biography as probably the William Robertson who was laureated by Duncan Forester in April 1645. From 1653 to 1680 he lived in the City of London and taught Hebrew. In 1680 he was appointed university teacher of Hebrew at Cambridge at a salary of £20 a year.Robertson believed Hebrew could be learned by ordinary people with a minimum of linguistic background. In the Interregnum he was supported by patrons such as John Sadler, William Steele and Lady Katherine Ranelagh, and was able to publish freely. In theology he followed David Dickson and Robert Douglas. After 1660 he had little support, and lost much of his version of the Hebrew New Testament of Elias Hutter in the Great Fire of London. Apart from his Edinburgh University education, the details of his early life are obscure. He spent most of his active life (from 1653-1680) in London where he was employed as a teacher of Hebrew. In 1680 he was appointed lecturer in Hebrew at Cambridge University. His published works on language are mostly concerned with Hebrew, although he did produce a work on Latin which enjoyed a certain popularity in its day - Phraseologia Generalis.
