Descripción

Green cloth. 8vo. 209pp. plus ad leaf. Illustrated. A manual of floriculture describing 75 common varieties of flowering plants designed to be raised with a minimum of care and effort. The author writes: "It is better to grow a few plants in perfection than many badly". There are several preliminary chapters on preparation of the soil, methods of plants, and propogation. This is followed by descriptions of 75 genera of flowering plants, including crocus, tulip, pansy, iris, clematis and many others. Each flower is fully described with its latin and common names, a description of its blossoms, suggestions for cultivation, cost of seeds and bulbs, and much more. The book is illustrated with many handsome full-page engravings of flower varieties. The author of this manual was the son and partner of a prominent Massachusetts manufacturer and merchant. A floriculturist at heart he was the author of many botanical guides including "Flowers For the Parlor and Garden" and "The Rhodendron and American Plants". This is a good copy with some heavy spotting to the cloth covers and some fraying to the spine tips. Internally the text is good but has quite a bit of soiling. The first few pages are lightly edge chipped and the front hinge has a small tear near the top. N° de ref. de la librería 4221
