Bruce 'Sensation' Smith of Drury Lane Theatre was one of the greatest set designers of spectacular theatre--introducing hydraulic stage machinery in 1894, --and such other spectacular set designs which dominated London theatre from 1872 and 1934; although Bruce was a landscape artist, writer and comedian, he was also a ruthless businessman and womanizer. Written by his grandson this candid biography explores this larger than life character who was responsible for some of the most spectacular theatre sets in late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Worked for and with some of the greatest names in live entertainment including Pinero, Shaw, Barrie, Gilbert & Sullivan, pavlova, Melba and Caruso. Such theatre greats such as Sir Henry Irving, Ellen Terry, Lily Langtree, Dan Leno, Harry Lauder and Dan and George Robey.
