Descripción:

Good in fair dust jacket. ; 153 p. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 153 pages; 1933 Viking HC/DJ 1st edition. Scarce collection of poems written both by Warner and her lesbian partner, Valentine Ackland. Original black cloth backstrip with gilt titles faded and somewhat indistinct. Bright orange paper covered boards. The majority of the dust jacket has been retained, missing the top 2/3 of the spine panel. Prior owner was apparently an enthusiast of Warner's as this book was part of a complete collection of Warner's books. Prior owner has penciled STW at the foot of a good number of poems, perhaps as a result of study or of other scholarship. The assignation of authorship was not made by Warner and Ackland. Dust jacket shelf soiled to surfaces and with rub at flap folds and missing the top 2/3 of the spine panel. New mylar cover added to preserve present DJ condition. VG-/G-. N° de ref. de la librería

Descripción The Viking Press, New York, 1933. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fair. 1st Edition. The correct first edition, preceding the UK edition. This copy inscribed by Valentine Ackland: "Ruth, with dearest love - Valentine 1933" and beneath this another hand has pencilled "Sylvia", although I cannot be certain that this is the handwriting of Townsend Warner. 8vo. 153pp. Cloth-backed paper boards with slightly defective gilt lettering to spine. A little light spotting to preliminary and concluding leaves, and occasionally throughout. A very good copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper: tanned, stained, chafed, nicked and chipped with a little loss, and spine panel lettering no longer visible. One-hundred and nine poems, fifty-four of them by Warner and the remainder written by her lover and long-term partner Ackland (an index in the UK edition of 1934 identified the author of each poem, but here they remain entirely anonymous – although a former owner has pencilled appropriate initials against each index entry, which could be easily erased if desired). A challenging and valiant experiment in anonymity, the collection was received coldly, all but ending the poetry careers of both authors – Warner did not issue another full collection of verse in her lifetime, claiming in a letter to the publisher of her 1985 Selected Poems "I intend to be a posthumous poet!" Both US and UK editions are extremely scarce – and much more so with the presentation inscription (I have been unable to identify 'Ruth' – it was the name of Ackland's mother, although it seems unlikely that she would address her so). Inscribed by Author(s). Nº de ref. del artículo: ARC91865
