Descripción

[10], 31, [5] leaves ; in-folio; full leather binding with gold ornaments and raised bands on the spine. First, very rare, edition of the only book by Emperor Claudius' famed physician, Scribonius. It contains the first reference to the Hippocratic Oath and mentions many remedies used for the most various sanitary purposes by members of the imperial family. Very interesting are the three different recipes for toothpaste (vinegar, honey, radish and salt are used, but also fine grains of glass) and the extensive use of opium in a wide range of drugs, from eyesalve to nasal polyps treatments (a section about opium poisoning is also present). Another prominent ingredient found in many medicaments is wine, and particularly the famed "Falernum" variety. Other curious insights at the Roman-era medicine show a rigorous scientific approach, with some occasional concessions to popular beliefs and to magical and fantastical remedies (like the purificatory rite of drinking one's own blood). Very broad in scope, it covers many diseases and a lot of tested cures, making it one of the most important medicine treatise of his era, along with Celsus' De re medicina and the 'Hippocratic collection'. "Scribonius was the first to describe accurately the preparation of true opium, and the first to reccomend electrotherapy (as provided by live torpedo-fish) for headaches and other nervous afflictions. He was also the earliest known author to mention the Hippocratic oath" (Norman) Norman 429, Adams C-1243, DSB GM 1984.1, Garrison-Morton 1785 Bound with Fernel's "De Abditis" ([16], 181, [3] pp.) and Turini's Opera ([6], 153, [1] leaves), which contains various essays on the cardiovascular system and the urinary system, one about the qualities of spring water and tank water, and one attributed to Dino Del Garbo ("Quaestio Famosissimi Dini De Florentia De Coena et Prandio") about dietary habits. Also present, at the end of the volume, is Turini's "Defensio contra Marcum Antonium Montisinum Geminiatensem, quod non in omni febre putrida conueniat missio sanguinis" (15, [1] leaves).
