A forerunner of Vegetarianism, by THE Mrs Kellogg. The Fourth REVISED Edition with new illustrations, etc. In grey-white covers with black titling and a LOVELY b/w illustration covering the front board. The Covers are VERY scraped/scratched/discoloured and marked with some surface loss to the rear board, pitted as tho wax, or oil or similar, has splattered it? - but the covers are sound and tight, and the large illustration of a Victorian maid? /housewife? /lady cook ? Stirring a pot on the range in a kitchen covering the full front cover is still most Attractive, and all the titling is clear. The book is now protected in a clear book plastic cover which has improved the books' appearance. Full of Advice on 'The Household Workshop', 'Dainty ways of Serving Fruit', 'Appropriate and healthful desserts', 'Nuts and Nut Foods', 'Meals for the Sick', etc, etc, and with lots of food hints and tips and with hundreds of Recipes, etc, including such delights as Grape Jelly Pie, Apple Toast, Scalloped Vegetable Oysters, etc, etc. A former owner's name and address in ink on the front pastedown. 487pp, Crown 8vo. Numerous b/w text illustrations, 36 full page b/w plates, many photographic. (Collated). All edges marbled - but faded/faint. Internally both hinges are tight and sound. The last index page has a very small hole in it, and the last free (blank) page is missing. There is a little light foxing to the endpapers /first few pages but Overall, apart from the odd 'thumbing' mark the interior is, unusually, Very clean and bright. A Fascinating ORIGINAL social 'document', as well as being an invaluable resource for students, cooks, vegetarians - anyone interested in the period, etc. A Wonderful glimpse into the turn of the century kitchen .
