Journalist & foreign correspondent John Upton Terrell, of California, was the author of a number of books on American history. In this book, he tells with realism the true story of the famed Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle, who arrived in New France at the age of 22 to explore the North American wilderness and to make a fortune . He was robbed, poisoned, in disgrace, and shot at by Indian arrows, and he braved danger and disease while travelling through the uncharted wilderness . The natural beauty of a pristine American wilderness of forest, great plains, and immense rivers is beautifully described . The realities of life amongst the hostile Indians is also laid out in stark reality, including some of the barbarism that the early explorers encountered . The historical figures of Joliet, Frontenac, Colbert, and King Louis XIV figure in this narrative which moves back and forth from the sophisticated of the Palace of Versailles, the King's residence outside Paris, to the rough campsites on the Mississippi where La Salle and his men had to make camp . La Salle dreamed of establishing an Empire for the King of France in North America; the English and Spanish were obvious threats, but he also had to cope with his own government's mismanagement, and with the Jesuits, who had their own plans for the area. La Salle was intelligent, but also willful and overbearing, which led to his setbacks, and, ultimately, to his murder. He posessed courage, determination, and vision, and was one of the few men of his day who understood the importance of what would one day become the American Middle West .
