Heavy wear to binding, with corners bumped and rubbed to boards, chipping and tearing to head and tail of spine, and scattered rubbing and soiling. Lean to spine. Top edge gilt. Front hinge cracked, text block cracked with many gatherings loose and laid in, rear hinge tender, spine visible at many pages. Bookplate of Grace Mann Parker to front pastedown, with previous owner's signature of Cambridge, Mass. historian and civic leader Thomas F. O'Malley. Frontispiece and title page loose and laid in. Several gatherings loose and laid in, much of middle of text block separated. Text is complete. 2" closed tear to fold-out "Map of Salem Village, 1692. by W. P. Upham, 1866," with some age-toning and many pencilled marks. Occasional pencilled marks to pages throughout. Chipping to some pages, with loss only to first letters of first three lines of page 326. Frontispiece, fold-out map, and facsimile signatures printed on both sides of leaf preceding page 281. An admittedly severely worn, but complete copy of Charles Wentworth Upham's further exploration of the events of 1692 and 1693 witch trials in his hometown of Salem.
